Introduction

Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(SHVRI, CAAS), located in Minhang Shanghai, established in 1964, was formerly known as Laboratory of Animal Schistosomiasis, CAAS. In 1982, it was renamed as Shanghai Institute of Animal Schistosomiasis, CAAS and in 1989, it was renamed as Shanghai Institute of Animal Parasitic Diseases, CAAS. In 2002, it was listed as a national non-profit scientific research institution. In 2006, it was renamed as Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute, CAAS and established Shanghai Branch of China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center. In March 2021, with the delegation of CAAS, Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute established Biosafety Research Center.

SHVRI prioritizes the ensuring of national agricultural biosafety, aims to meet the great needs of our nation. SHVRI takes the major animal diseases, zoonotic diseases, and major foreign diseases as its research target, conducts a full-chain research system on biosafety public policies, basic theories, monitoring and early warning, technological breakthroughs, product R&D and integrated applications to ensure national agricultural biosafety, further more to provides strategic support for technology self-reliance and self-improvement.

SHVRI now has 139 employees, serve 7 administrative departments and 11 innovation research teams, among them there are total 86 senior professional experts, and 84 master's and doctoral supervisors. Besides, SHVRI has 10 scientific and technological platforms, including the National Reference Laboratory for Schistosomiasis Control and Prevention, SHVRI also in charge of  Chinese   Journal of Animal Infectious Diseases .

Since its establishment, SHVRI has undertaken more than 1000 various scientific research projects; won over 68 national and provincial level awards; obtained 16 national new veterinary drug certificates; published over 3000 papers, including over 1100 indexed by SCI; issued 80 monographs; held over 160 national invention patents.

SHVRI has been awarded with the title of National Advanced Unit for Schistosomiasis Control for four consecutive times, and has been rated as the fifth National Civilized Unit and the previous Shanghai Civilized Unit. It has also been awarded with the Civilized Unit of CAAS multiple times.
